Konbini

Also called convenience store payment, konbini payment

A Japanese payment method where the player gets a payment code at checkout and pays for it in cash at a convenience store counter.

Konbini payment lets a player without a credit card, or one who would rather not use it, buy online. The checkout issues a payment code, the player pays at a convenience store, and the order completes once the store confirms the payment.

KOMOJU, a Japanese payment provider, lists konbini and prepaid cards among the common ways players in Japan pay for games (KOMOJU). A Japanese web shop that takes only cards leaves those players out.

Two things follow for the studio. The sale is confirmed after the player visits the store, so the game has to grant items when the provider’s payment notification arrives, some time after checkout. And Japanese players can now be sent to a web shop from mobile games. Since the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect in December 2025, Apple allows link-outs in Japan at a 15% commission (10% on reduced terms) on sales within 7 days of the tap (Apple). Since 30 September 2026 Google’s billing choice program has covered web links in Japan, at 20% (10% on the first $1M) within 24 hours of a link. Its older external payments program closed to new apps that day and ends after 31 March 2027. See payment methods.
